Hello!
I’m so happy you’re asking about cabling because it is SO fun. It looks really intricate but actually is pretty simple. If you haven’t already, you should create an account on www.ravelry.com. It’s totally free and it has TONS of free patterns to choose from. There, you can search for patterns that incorporate cabling and start knitting away on any that you particularly like! In fact, my first cabling project was a free Ravelry pattern called “Snappy Hat.” You might want to check that out. :)
There are a few other free knitting pattern websites, but none of them compare to Ravelry in terms of the quality of the patterns. If you’re willing to pay money for a pattern that has cabling, you can check out Vogue Knitting’s website or www.knitpicks.com.
Now, for the actual learning-how-to-cable part. I ALWAYS consult Youtube whenever I have questions about knitting-related things. I’m a visual learner and often have trouble learning knitting techniques from books. Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bn3I_JD7Ek4. I find this cabling tutorial to be particularly useful. When you cable, you can either use an extra double-pointed needle to hold the cabling stitches or (this is what I do) use a needle that is specifically for cabling. They can be found at your local craft/sewing/fabric/hobby store and are pretty inexpensive.
I hope this helps! Good luck with your venture into the wonderful world of cables!
